The Third Team travelled to Howick for the first time and were asked to bat first in lovely
surrounds at the Hall. Matty McDine scored an impressive 41 with 7 from Mike McIntyre in an
opening stand of 35. The next two wickets fell at 71 with McDine bowled and Carl Salvidge out
without troubling the scorers in the next over. A superb 76 from Henry Malton was ended when he
was deceived by a slower one after a long partnership with Andrew Davison that put on 91 runs.
Davidson also made an impressive 79 which was ended by a fantastic one handed catch on the
boundary. Richard Warwick with an unbeaten 46 and 21 not out from James Carr pushed the score
on to the end as Tynemouth posted 285-6 off their 40 overs.
A determined start by Howick saw an opening stand of 60 from A Riley and T Robinson. James
Carr bowled out his 10 overs for only 21 runs and Will Perry an encouraging 5 overs which cost 34
runs thanks to a short boundary. Ed Snelders came into the attack and broke the stand in a spell of 8
overs costing 40 runs. McDine was given 2 overs that were hit for 11 runs, and the total now 115-1
although behind the required rate, before Don Catley was brought on to take wickets. He obliged by
trapping first Riley for 50 then C Hinchcliffe for 42 to see Howick now 153-3. A smart stumping by
Salvidge off Catley gave him figures of 3-28 off 8 overs and a run out by Warwick completed the
wickets haul. Howick ended 89 runs short on 196-5. Skipper Neil Bennett bowled 5 overs of spin
for 30 runs and Malton 2 overs costing 12 runs but no more bowling bonus points could be claimed.
Perhaps if the many catches on offer had been taken then the full 30 points were easily achievable
but this was a good start to the season.
