The Beta Team Lost.......

The Second Team were at home to Blaydon Seconds. Tynemouth narrowly missed out in a very close and tense match. In miserable conditions Tynemouth skipper Graeme Hallam once again lost the toss and Blaydon had no hesitation in asking the home side to bat first.

Openers Graeme Hallam and Ben McGee found batting difficult to begin with against the new ball but with a persistence drizzle the ball soon became wet and batting conditions became easier. Both batsmen saw the opportunity to attack and quickly progressed the score to 67 off only 14 overs. With the Blaydon bowlers losing heart and finding it a challenge to grip the ball, Hallam's dismissal for 30 was a cruel blow. Youngster McGee looked at total ease playing two exquisite cover drives off successive balls on his way to 21 before he became off spinner Miller's first victim. The wily off spinner then triggered another middle order collapse and returned figures of 4 for 22 off 15 overs. Andrew Davison, Tony Lion and Euan Stenhouse all got themselves set before giving away their wickets and Tynemouth looked like they were going to achieve only disappointing, below par score before stalwart David Hayward came to the rescue. He used all of his substantial experience in striking a brisk 34 not out, enabling the home aide to set Blaydon 163 runs for victory.

In reply, Blaydon got off to a very poor start with a calamitous mix up which saw Wightman run out for 0. Greenwell and Baines steadied the ship for a while until pace bowler Finn Lonnberg struck to remove opener Greenwell. This brought start bowler Miller to the crease; from past history Tynemouth knew him as a dangerous batsmen. Hallam was convinced he had him LBW first ball only to find that the umpire did not agree! Miller accepted his favourable decision with both hands and struck a damaging 43 runs until Hallam eventually got him; this time bowled and thus removing any doubt. Youngsters Ryan Macciocchi and Lonnberg were also providing great support with the ball, Macciocchi only conceding 34 runs from his allotted 15 overs. Lonnberg was bowling with a lot of pace and taking regular wickets. With the game delicately poised at 123 for 7, Blaydon's opening bowler Nicholson started to play some shots. He progressed the score on to 160 for 7 and all seemed lost for the home side. However, a run out and the dismissal of Nicholson in successive balls swung the game towards Tynemouth. It was not to be though, with Blaydon ‘s number 10 and 11 bats crawling over the finishing line to secure the win with 163 for 9. Tynemouth can take a lot of positives from their never-say-die attitude and hope to be reunited with last week’s start performer Chris Beever after his time served with the Firsts.
